AHBA Futurity Rules and Regulations

Breedings purchased in the 2018 AHBA Futurity Stallion Auction will need to be used in 2018 for the resulting foal to be eligible to participate in the AHBA Futurity classes. If a breeding cannot be used in 2018, the winning bidder will need to discuss options with that particular stallion owner. The resulting foal will NOT be eligible to compete in the AHBA Futurity classes but is eligible to compete in the Legacy Futurity classes.

  2. Only Officially Nominated  yearlings out of AHBA Nominated Stallions are eligible to participate
  3. Any mare in foal to a AHBA Futurity Nominated Stallion can be nominated for the AHBA Futurity Legacy Classes.  The mares must be officially nominated  before Dec 31 of the breeding year for the foal to become eligible for the AHBA Futurity Legacy Classes.
  4. Nominated  foals for the AHBA Futurity Legacy Program will compete only as ATH Yearlings in the AHBA World Cup Las Vegas show.  The Prize money for these Legacy classes will be provided from the Nominated  fees collected prior to the birth of the eligible foals.

GENERAL FUTURITY STUCTURE

1. The long-term plan is that the money for the payout in the Futurity will come from three sources: 1) The AHBA Stallion breeding auction, 2) The Nomination Fees of $500 per Stallion per year, and 3) The entry fees for the Futurity Classes.

2. The horses eligible for the futurity classes will consist of one nominated foal sired by each Auction Stallion from the person who has the wining bid for each of the stallions in the AHBA Stallion Auction (Successful Auction Bidder) and one nominated foal from each Stallion Owner who entered a Stallion in the Auction. Each nominated foal must be officially entered prior to December 31 of the year prior to the birth of the foal.

3. The Futurity classes will be held at the Las Vegas Show and will consist of a Yearling Class for fillies, a Yearling Class for Colts, a Two Year Old Class for fillies, and a Two Year Old Class for Colts. The prize money available for each class will be 25% of the total available money collected from the AHBA Stallion Auction and the entry fees collected for each individual class. For example, the Stallion Auction funds and Stallion Nomination Fees collected at the 2008 Auction will be divided as follows: 25% for the Yearling Filly Class in 2010, 25% for the Futurity Yearling Colt Class in 2010, 25% for the Two Year Old Filly Class in 2011, and 25% for the Two Year Old Colt Class in 2011. Each of these classes would also include the entry fees collected for each individual class added to the prize money. Prize money will be given in each class to the Class Champion, Class Reserve Champion, and the remaining three horses making up the Top Five.

4. The Futurity Classes will be Amateur To Handle (ATH) classes. They will be conducted and judged in the same manner as the other halter classes at the Las Vegas Show. Winners of the Futurity Classes will not be eligible for the normal Las Vegas Show Junior Champion classes. Horses can be entered in both the Futurity Class and the Las Vegas normal halter classes.

5. The AHBA Stallion Auction will be conducted each year. Tthe AHBA Board reserves the right to change the time and place of the auction. Stallions in the Auction must be nominated by an AHBA Stallion Rights Holder. Each Stallion Rights Holder can nominate a maximum of two stallions for each Auction. One of the Stallions nominated by a Rights Holder must be owned by the Stallion Rights Holder. Stallions Rights Holders have two options to select within 60 days after the completion of the Stallion Auction: 1)The Stallion Right Holder MAY pay any deficit on the final auction bid price as necessary to bring the breeding price up to $2,500.00 and thereby earn the right for the Stallion Owner to nominate, in addition to foal nominations by the Successful Auction Bidder, ONE mare in foal to this stallion for the resulting Futurity class, OR 2) The Stallion Rights Holder MAY elect NOT to pay the deficit required to bring the breeding price up to $2,500.00 which thereby ELIMINATES the Stallion Rights Holdrtd right to nominate one mare in foal to this stallion. If Option 2 is selected, the only foal eligible for the AHBA Futurity Classes will be the Successful Auction bidders for the AHBA Futurity Classes. In all cases, the successful Auction bidder will retain their mare nomination right as long as the $1,000.00 minimum bid is guaranteed and paid to AHBA by the Stallion Rights Holder.

6. The number of AHBA Founding Stallion Rights Holders will be limited to 25, with each Founding Rights Holder having the ability to nominate two stallions for the Auction. The one-time fee to become an AHBA Founding Stallion Rights Holder will be $2,500 which must be paid to AHBA before 1 November 2007. After the initial 25 Stallion Founding Rights Holders are committed, the AHBA may consider a limited number of additional Rights Holders at a higher initiation fee than the Founding Rights Holders. Individual Stallion nominations for the Stallion Auction will be $500 per stallion per year.

AHBA LEGACY FUTURITY INFORMATION

1. The long-term plan is that the money for the payout in the Legacy Futurity will come from two sources: 1) Nominations Fee of $100 per nominated foal each year, and 2) Entry fees for the Legacy Futurity Classes.

2. The horses eligible for the Legacy futurity classes will consist of any nominated foal sired by each Auction Stallion. Each nominated foal must be officially entered prior to December 31 of the year prior to the birth of the foal.

3. The Legacy Futurity classes will be held at the Las Vegas Show and will consist of a Yearling Class for fillies and a Yearling Class for Colts. The prize money available for each class will be 50% of the total available money collected from the nomination fees and the entry fees collected for each individual class. For example, 50% for the Yearling Filly Class in 2013 and 50% for the Futurity Yearling Colt Class in 2013. Each of these classes will also add the entry fees colelcted for each individual class to the prize money. Prize money will be given in each class to the Class Champion, Class Reserve Champion, and the remaining three horses making up the Top Five.

4. The Legacy Futurity Classes will be Amateur to Handle (ATH) classes. They will be conducted and judged in the same manner as the other halter classes at the Las Vegas Show. If Option 2 is selected, the only foal eligible for the AHBA Futurity Classes will be the Successful Auction bidders for the AHBA Futurity Classes. 2017 AHBA Las Vegas Futurity Changes

The AHBA Board of Directors is pleased to announce a number of improvements to our very successful AHBA Futurity Program.  Beginning with the 2017 AHBA Futurity Stallion Auction the following changes will become effective.

  1. The Two Year Old Auction classes (i.e. Two Year Auction Filly Class and Two Year Auction Colt Class) will be eliminated as  stand alone classes.  In their place, new Two Year Old Combined Auction and Legacy Classes  (i.e. a Two Year Old Filly Auction/LegacyClass and a Two Year Old Colt Auction/Legacy Class)will be established.   The previous Yearling Auction Classes  and the previous Legacy Yearling Classes will continue as in the past.
  2. With these class change, we will also adjust the prize money allocations  to the benefit of the Yearling Auction and Legacy classes (e.g. increase of the prize money pool for these classes) and also fund the new combined Auction/Legacy Two Year Old Classes.   With the increased Prize Money pools for all of these Futurity and Legacy Classes, we will now be able in decrease the Futurity and Legacy Classes from $500 per entry down to $200 per entry.

Why is AHBA Making these Changes ?  The changes were made  based on a detailed analysis of past participation in our Futurity program classes over the last 7 years .  This analysis showed a steady increase in the number of entries for the Yearling Auction and Legacy Classes (e.g. growing to more than 20 entries in recent years).  However, it  also showed a steady and very poor participation in the two year old Auction Classes (e.g.  only 2 - 4 entries per class each year).  In addition, the Yearling Legacy classes have grown nicely and breeders have shown an interest in expanding the Legacy program to included some Two Year Old ATH Legacy Classes.

Therefore, in an effort to respond to these key factors (poor interest in Two Year old Auction Classes and strong and growing interest in the Yearling Classes Auction Classes coupled with the interest for a Two Year Old Legacy Class, the AHBA voted to approve the changes describe herein.

New AHBA Stallion Auction Pool Allocations:

                                                                        Previous                        New Allocations

Futurity Yearling Filly Class                             25 %                               35%

Futurity Yearling Colt Class                              25%                                35%

Current Futurity 2 Yr Filly Class                       25%                                0

Current Futurity 2 Yr Colt Class                        25%                                0

Legacy Yearling Filly Class                                0%                                  7.5%

Legacy Yearling Colt Class                                 0%                                 7.5%

Futurity/ Legacy Two Yr Filly Class                   N/A                                7.5%

Futurity/Legacy Two Yr Colt Class                    N/A                                 7.5%

Percentages describe how the AHBA Total Futurity Stallion Pool is to be divided among the various classes.  In addition, the Legacy classes will divide the total Legacy Mare Nominations  Pool equally between the now four Legacy Classes (two Yearling Classes and two new Two Year Old Auction/Legacy Classes)

Example:  Class Prize Money Pool Results from these changes

Below is a Summary Class Prize Money for a Typical Year with a AHBA Stallion Auction Pool of $150,000 and a Legacy Mare Nomination Pool of $20,000 (i.e. 200 year end mare nominations at $100 each).  Class entry fee contributions are not included.

                                                                            Past Program                   New Program

EachYearling Futurity Class                              $37,500                             $52,500

Each 2 Yr Futurity Class                                    $37,000                              0 (Classes now eliminated )

Each Yearling Legacy Class                              $10,000                             $16,250

Each 2 Yr Futurity/Legacy Class                       None                                  $16,250

Summary Benefits of these AHBA Futurity Changes:

  1. Eliminates the two existing unsupported Two Year Old Futurity Auction Classes
  2. Creates two new combined Futurity/Legacy Two Year Old classes which will support  a much larger group of eligible two year old horses rather than the small pool of Auction only eligible horses.
  3. Increase the number of prize money classes for Legacy Mare Nominated foals by adding a Filly and Colt two year old Legacy Prize money Class in addition to the current two Yearling Legacy Classes  that we now provide.
  4. All Futurity Class prize money pools for the Yearling Futurity and the Legacy programs are increased.
  5. Makes possible significantly lower entry fees ($200 vs previous $500) for all of the AHBA Las Vegas Futurity money classes thereby making it more affordable to all exhibitors.
